I’m slow to the news this week, but I did hear this yesterday and forgot to say something… Richardo Mantalban, beloved to the Star Trek universe as Captain Kirk’s super-genius nemisis, Khan Noonian Singh, died on January 14, 2009. I knew he was having quite a few medical issues, though I’m not sure exactly to the nature of them. He was 88 years old.

I also used to watch Fantasy Island as a kid. But I loved him best as Khan, hissing “Keeeerk!” as he spat lines from Moby Dick. RIP, Richardo Mantalban.

  1. Fantasy Island aired from 1978 to 1984. You weren’t old enough to watch Fantasy Island at 10pm. You must of watched reruns.

  2. Let’s see. You’d have been 9 years old when that series ended. It was on at 10 on Saturday nights, not on school nights. You might have seen it in its first run if your parents indulged you by letting you stay up late. Maybe you saw it a few times and then saw the Malcolm McDowell version. I’m not going to say how old I was when that series ended, but I’d been practicing law for 6 years.

  3. First of all, as Bob states, I was 9 when the series ended. It seems to me that my memories actually stretch back that far to watching the show between the ages of 5 and 10… I remember watching with my parents. I didnt have a bed time on weekends! That’s how I got to watch _The Terminator_ on HBO when I was like 10 years old. The secret in my house was waiting until the parents fell asleep. If we were still up, we were allowed to take over the TV if we werent too loud. I dont think my parents ever really imposed a bed time, except maybe on school nights, and even then it was like 8pm…
